The Federal Government has announced that the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, will reopen for flight operations on Monday, April 28, 2025, following the completion of emergency repairs.
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, had earlier closed the airport after a critical rupture was discovered on a vital part of the runway.
The sudden development had raised serious safety concerns, prompting immediate closure for repairs.
Initially, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mrs. Obiageli Orah, had explained that the work would span from April 22 and was expected to be completed by May 6, 2025. She stated:
“We had no choice but to shut down operations to carry out urgent rehabilitation work on the runway.”
Providing an update on Saturday, Mrs. Orah confirmed the early completion of the project.
She said “However, rehabilitation works on the runway have been completed, and the runway is cleared for landings and takeoffs by the engineers working with FAAN.”
She further appreciated travelers and airport users for their patience, saying.
“We thank all stakeholders and passengers for their understanding during this challenging period.”
Reassuring the public of safety, she added, “All decisions taken were for the safety and security of our esteemed passengers and flight operations.”
