Edo: Police slam charge on PDP campaign spokesman

Operatives of Edo State police command, Tuesday said it has arraigned  Rev Olu Martins, the deputy spokesman for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship campaign council over “inciting comments in a viral video.”

The State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Funsho Adegboye, who disclosed this to journalists in Benin City discribed the viral video as inciting and warned political actors to  avoid inflammatory languages that could cause public unrest.

He stated that inciting violence is a serious crime in the criminal code, and also an offence  in the Electoral Act.

According to Adeboye, “Olu Martins was invited and he has been charged to court.

“The police decided to resolve the  viral video issue in court to serve as deterrent to other political actors that may be tempted to follow the same line of action.

“That is the situation now and I want to use the opportunity to plead with political gladiators in the electioneering that everybody should play by the rules,” the CP added.

Recall that the PDP campaign deputy spokesman was seen in a viral video threatening individuals who defected from the party, a development that prompted  the All Progressives Congress (APC) to alert the police.
