Edo pensioners disown planned protest

The leadership of Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) in Edo state Tuesday disowned a letter purporting that it was plotting to protest against the state government.

Chairman of the union, Comrade Samuel Okhuelegbe, who refuted the claim during a stakeholders meeting in Benin City said individuals who authored the said letter do not represent the interest of the pensioners.

He also stated that the intention of the authors of the letter was to create bad blood between the pensioners and the Edo state government because according to him, we were paid our pensions by 25th or 26th of every month.

Okhuelegbe wondered why the union would contemplate embarking on demonstration against a government that has paid 21 years of pension arrears at the state and local government levels.

The NUP chairman added that, “the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led government introduced 13th month  pay for pensioners in Edo state, in addition to free health insurance which would help senior citizens to live longer life.”
