The Akwa Ibom state governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel, has warned parents and guardians not to abandon discipline to teachers, saying that homes should be the bedrock of learning for all children.

Emmanuel gave the advise at the 2023 National Children’s Day Celebration with the theme; ‘The State of The Nigerian Children Today: Proper Parenting for Value Reorientation and National Consciousness,” Saturday, in Uyo.

The governor, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr Emmanuel Ekuwem, lamented that most parents have reneged from their responsibility of giving proper upbringing to their wards and the negligence was being felt in the society through social vices among children.

He noted that the role of the parents in a child’s upbringing is imperative and that children mostly grow with the ideals, values, and orientations received from homes.

“The role of the parents in the life of the children cannot be overemphasised. I would like to say this when parenting is right, everything will be right. The absence of good parenting breeds social vices.

“To build a better and prosperous society, parents must instill good values and proper orientation in their children to transform them into better people.”

The governor admonished all children to be obedient to their parents, shun bad friends, work and study hard, and be prayerful at all times.
