As the nation marks this year’s Democracy day, the Director General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mallam Lanre Issa Onilu, has commended the country for successfully maintaining democracy for 26 years, noting that the country’s commitment to democratic governance is a testament to the resilience and determination of its people.
This was contained in a statement Thursday by deputy director
communication and media NOA Paul Odenyi.
Acknowledging Nigeria’s democratic journey over the years, Onilu said, “Our mandate as an agency enjoins us to promote democracy as the best form of government, and we are proud to say that Nigeria has made significant progress in this regard.”
Reflecting on the efforts of the Agency in promoting democratic governance, he stated that “Democracy” is one of the fundamental values enshrined in the Nigerian Promise of the National Values Charter, stressing that the government is not only mandated to uphold this value but also to promote and protect it as a cornerstone of the country’s development and progress.
The DG further urged Nigerians to uphold the fundamental principles of democracy, emphasising the importance of freedom of expression, thought, and conscience.
“These principles are the bedrock of our democracy, and we must ensure that they are protected and promoted at all times,” he added.
Onilu also highlighted the importance of civic engagement and participation in democratic processes, noting that as citizens, it is their responsibility to hold their leaders accountable, speak out against injustice, demand good governance, and actively contribute to the country’s democratic growth and development.
Speaking further, he encouraged Nigerians to take an active role in shaping the country’s future by actively participating in democratic processes, engaging in informed decision-making, and contributing their voices to the national discourse which helps in building a more inclusive and responsive democracy.
The Director General, who reiterated the Agency’s unwavering dedication to promoting civic education, engagement, and participation across the country, also said that NOA would continue to work tirelessly to promote democratic principles and values, foster a culture of citizenship, and empower Nigerians with the knowledge and skills needed to participate effectively in the country’s democratic processes.
