Courage and conviction, by TAJUDEEN A. TIJJANI

Governor of Kaduna state, Nasir Ahmed El-Rufai, is a different person to different people.
Since he assumed office in May 2015, precisely three years ago, he has transfigured governance of the state to a greater height.
Like the case of malignant disease needing a drastic therapy Mallam, as fondly called by his numerous admirers, has taken the state out of the woods by putting governance in proper perspectives.
Immediately he assumed office, the fiery politician started to put things right but those who still believe in the old order are not comfortable and did everything to thwart his efforts.
In a situation that nothing works, Mallam convened a meeting of all stakeholders to draw a roadmap to make Kaduna great again.
The El-Rufai government decisively dealt with the ghost and unqualified workers phenomenon to sanitise all sectors.
His insistence to rid ministries and parastatals in the state of ghosts and unqualified personnel is welcome development.
There is also the case of thousands of primary school teachers who were found wanting in their jobs and showed the way out and replaced with qualified ones.
The unearthing of malfeasance in almost all the government agencies and parastatals were tackled and sanity restored.
Factually, the significance of these discoveries is hard to overestimate looking at the rot over the years.
Exactly three years, the citizens of Kaduna state understand the wisdom the new impetus aimed at getting things working in the state.
Despite the criticisms of his mode of governance, Governor El-Rufai continues to work for the people, rebuffing any distraction.
He is one who has effectively revolutionized the concept of leadership and essence of governance in Nigeria.
El-Rufai believes that leadership comes with lots of tasks and challenges.
He believes that a good leader must be able to demonstrate good leadership traits to confront the challenges.
Within the three years under review, the governor has invested heavily on many sectors such as education, health, housing, security, roads and rural development that even his opponents have applauded.
Today, almost all the primary and secondary schools across the 23 local government areas have undergone renovation and building of new ones.
The state government introduced a yearly economic summit tagged KADINVEST which has attracted many local and international businesses to the state in order to create jobs.
A disciplined scholar and dedicated servant of the people, Mallam has shown that leadership is a service and has maintained that philosophy of how to touch the lives of the governed positively.
He is an economic reformer who has personal vision and acumen to deliver.
El-Rufai has spearheaded an economy which has touched on every facet of development.
The rate of economic growth in Kaduna state within the period under review is unprecedented.
No doubt the man is working round the clock to fulfill his electioneering promises, especially in the area of infrastructure development.
These are physical things to see.
The roads under construction in all parts of the state are just too numerous to mention.
Today, there is a genuine effort on the part of El-Rufai government to do things differently.
The administration has demonstrated exemplary leadership and commitment to revive comatose industries and building new ones.
Those who accused the governor of highhandedness have been unable to fault his commitment to fulfilling his electoral promises on how to make Kaduna great again.
Within three years, many industries have sprung up across the state to provide employment to the people and eliminate youth restiveness.
There is the need therefore that the people of Kaduna state should support Governor ElRufai to change Kaduna where we will again see potable water, good road network, fantastic health delivery and quality education almost free.
The government has touched the lives of the people positively in many areas.
Areas of concentration included dualization of road and building of new ones with the government commissioning over 400 in the city and local government areas.
The jinxed trailer park at Maraban Jos in Igabi local government and Zaria water property are nearly completed under this government with speed it required under a public private partnership.
On housing, the present administration has laid foundation and commencement of many low cost houses in the state to ease accommodation problems.
While the citizens are commending Governor El-Rufai on many fronts, it is their believe that the governor can solve half of the housing problems in Kaduna, if houses left unoccupied at the Millennium City built by past government are allocated to the people.
This government has also prioritized the educational sector by building new schools and equipping old ones.
It built government science secondary schools in Manchock, Jere, Buruku, Rigachikun, Pambeguwa and Hunkuyi, among others, with world class facilities.
In addition to being upgraded the state primary health care centres are also rendering free of medical services to senior citizens and aged residents from 70years and above as one of its strategic health development plans.
The traditional institutions were not left out in the welfare package of the state government as they were recently saddled with the responsibility of keeping peace in their domains.
It is glaring from all tenets of democracy that past successive administrations in the state have neglected to do the right thing.
Such failures are responsible for our present predicament which the present administration has vowed to correct.
We may have also made the wrong choices of leadership since the beginning of the democratic process in 1999.
Unless we move away from politics of self enrichment, the well-being of the citizens will remain threatened.
