Confab: NGOs in North-west protest delegates’ composition

Some non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in the North-west have spoken against the composition of delegates for the national conference.

Addressing a press conference in Sokoto, the chairman, National Council of Muslim Youth Organisations (NACOMYO), Dr. Sahabi Maidamma Jabo, said after studying the list of the delegates, they observed that it had been skewed against Muslims who constituted more than 70 per cent of the population.
According to him, out of the 492 delegates, Muslims constituted about one third of the total number of the delegates.

He said many social and professional groups were totally represented by the Christians.
He said: “Decision-making in the conference could be achieved by either consensus   or 75 per cent majority which is clearly to the disadvantage of Muslims as the Christian delegates almost made that percentage and cannot therefore protect the interest of Islam and Muslims.”
He, therefore, urged Muslims Ummah to boycott the conference because, according to him, it is an apparent plot to marginalise Muslims.

Meanwhile, the Civil Society Organisations and (NGOs) in Sokoto, Kebbi Zamfara and Katsina states have jointly decried the composition of the delegates alleging that certain areas were favoured against the others.

The CSO/ NGOs had in a joint press release signed by the coalition’s chairmen,  Malam Ibraheem Abdullahi Shuni, Adamu Tudun Doki, Ayuba Sanchi and Aeron Jacob; chairmen of Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara and Katsina, respectively, said there was no single NGO from these states that made the list.

”More worrisome is that the characters mentioned in the list of CSOs are
not known to many. And even some of them that are known are not those you will describe as having the capacity or reliable. It is clear from onset
that the nominees will only be there to do the government’s bidding.”
