The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, describing him as a “towering figure of faith” and a “champion of mercy” whose global impact resonated strongly within the Nigerian Christian community.
Pope Francis, who died at the age of 88, was remembered by CAN for his compassion, humility, and enduring commitment to justice and peace.
In a statement signed by Archbishop Daniel Okoh, President of CAN, the organisation extended heartfelt condolences to the Catholic Church and all those mourning the late pontiff.
“It is with deep sorrow that the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) mourns the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, who departed this life at the age of 88,” Archbishop Okoh said.
“On behalf of the national leadership of CAN and the entire Christian community in Nigeria, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the Catholic Church and to all who held dear his extraordinary leadership and boundless compassion.”
Reflecting on Pope Francis’ leadership, Archbishop Okoh highlighted the pontiff’s deep spiritual influence and his commitment to interfaith dialogue and social justice.
“Pope Francis was a towering figure of faith whose papacy radiated mercy, justice, and a profound love for humanity,” he stated.
“His legacy left an indelible mark on Nigeria, where he strengthened the Church by appointing Nigerian bishops and cardinals, affirming the vibrant faith of our people.”
“His unwavering commitment to interfaith dialogue brought hope for peace in our diverse nation, nurturing unity in the face of many challenges,” Archbishop Okoh said.
“His outspoken advocacy against poverty, corruption, and inequality deeply resonated with us, urging all to uphold the dignity of every Nigerian.”
Although Pope Francis never visited Nigeria during his papacy, CAN noted the significance of his pastoral journeys across the African continent and the spiritual impact of his writings.
“Though he never visited Nigeria, his pastoral journeys across Africa conveyed powerful messages of solidarity,” the statement read.
“His teachings in Laudato Si’ and Amoris Laetitia enriched our spiritual lives, addressing vital issues such as environmental stewardship and the sanctity of family life.”
As the Catholic Church and the global Christian community mourn the passing of Pope Francis, CAN urged Nigerians to reflect on his message of compassion and justice.
“As we bid farewell to this devoted servant of God, we pray for the peaceful repose of his soul and for the Catholic Church in this time of transition,” Archbishop Okoh concluded.
“May the legacy of Pope Francis, rooted in compassion, justice, and humility, continue to inspire us as we strive towards a more united and righteous Nigeria.”
