The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially unveiled a newly redesigned trophy for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), setting the stage for what is poised to be the most significant edition of the tournament yet.

The updated trophy, part of a broader rebranding initiative, features a striking combination of gold and silver finishes. A standout element of the design is the presence of 54 engraved lines encircling a central map of Africa, symbolising unity across all CAF member nations.

CAF described the new trophy as a representation of the values that CHAN embodies—unity, identity, and progress. It will be awarded at the conclusion of the tournament, scheduled to run from August 2 to 30, and co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda—a historic first for the competition.

Record Prize Pool

CAF also announced a record $10.4 million prize pool for the 2024 tournament—the highest in CHAN history—as part of ongoing efforts to raise the profile of continental football and better support participating teams.

Prize Breakdown:

Winners – $3.5 million

Runners-up – $1.2 million

Third place – $700,000

Fourth place – $600,000

Quarter-finalists – $450,000 each

Third in group stage – $300,000 each

Fourth or fifth in group stage – $200,000 each

Group Stage and Hosts

A total of 19 national teams will compete in this year’s tournament, divided into four groups, each hosted by one of the three East African co-host nations. The tournament will kick off in Tanzania, with the final scheduled to take place in Kenya and the third-place match in Uganda.

Group A (Kenya):
Kenya, Morocco, Angola, DR Congo, Zambia

Group B (Tanzania):
Tanzania, Madagascar, Mauritania, Burkina Faso, Central African Republic

Group C (Uganda):
Uganda, Niger, Guinea, Algeria, South Africa

Group D:
Senegal, Nigeria, Sudan, Congo

Group D, composed of only four teams, features defending champions Senegal and former finalists Nigeria, making it one of the tournament’s most highly anticipated matchups.

Unlike the Africa Cup of Nations, CHAN is exclusive to players active in their domestic leagues, providing a unique platform to showcase homegrown talent across the continent. This year’s edition is also seen as a key rehearsal for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which will be hosted by the same three nations.

With a fresh trophy, historic co-hosting format, and record financial incentives, CHAN 2024 promises to deliver a thrilling celebration of African football and local talent.
