Bus rams into market, k!lls pregnant woman, 4 others in Yobe

An 18-seater Toyota Hiace bus with registration number KTG 283 XA rammed into the busy Damagum market in Yobe state, killing a pregnant woman and four others, and injuring 19 people.

The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in the state, Livinus Yilzoom, confirmed the casualties, stating that the incident occurred on Sunday evening as pedestrians were leaving the market.

“The five deceased individuals were not occupants of the vehicle but pedestrians waiting by the roadside to cross. The driver, while attempting to avoid a pedestrian, lost control due to excessive speed and struck the victims. So far, 19 people have been injured and five killed,” he explained.

Yilzoom added that upon receiving the report, the FRSC Unit Command in Dogon Kuka dispatched a crash investigation team to the scene and evacuated the victims to Damagum General Hospital for treatment.

He noted that the investigation identified speed limit violations and loss of control as the primary causes of the crash.
