Breaking: Gunmen invade market in Akwa Ibom, cart away monies, other valuables

Unknown gunmen have attacked Nyong Essien market in Uyo metropolis carting away money and other valuables.

The robbery operation happened at about 6pm on Wednesday.

It was gathered that the criminals operated shop after shop, ordering traders to tender all their monies to them.

An eyewitness who did not want his name mentioned said that the attackers entered the market with a vehicle carrying well sophisticated weapons.

“Some armed robbers entered the market with a vehicle carrying solid guns. They walk shop after shop collecting money from traders”

The gunmen after their operation were said to have fired bullets in the air to clear the way for their escape, although no casualty was seen.

Blueprint observed that all business owners horridly brought their businesses to a close and people were seen running to and fro for safety.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relation Officer, SP Odiko Macdon, said the command had released its operatives to all parts of the metropolis to overpower the situation.

Macdon who described the incident as unfortunate, assured that the perpetrators would soon be apprehended.

“We are aware of the incident. It is rather unfortunate. We have released our men to overpower the situation.

“Let me assure you that anybody that tries to truncate the peaceful existence which this state is known for by way of cultism, robbery and other crimes shall be caught and brought to book,” he added
