Bayer Leverkusen have parted ways with head coach Erik Ten Hag after only two Bundesliga matches in charge, the club announced on Monday.

The 54-year-old Dutchman was appointed during the summer as successor to Xabi Alonso, who left the German champions for Real Madrid. His arrival was seen as a fresh start for Leverkusen following their historic Bundesliga title win last season under Alonso.

However, Ten Hag’s reign has come to an abrupt end after a disappointing start to the campaign. The team failed to impress in their opening two league fixtures, raising doubts over his ability to continue the momentum built by his predecessor.

Ten Hag had previously been dismissed by Manchester United in October 2024 after a turbulent spell at Old Trafford. His move to Germany was regarded as an opportunity to rebuild his reputation, but the early dismissal marks another setback in his managerial career.

Leverkusen confirmed that an interim coach will be appointed while the search for a permanent replacement begins. The club emphasized its commitment to maintaining high performance standards as it looks ahead to domestic and European challenges this season.
