Boko Haram kills New Marte DPO, injures others 

Superintendent of Police (SP) Pius Sunday, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) Marte Divisional Headquarters has been killed with another officer injured following a Monday night attack.

A statement issued Wednesday and signed by ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, the Police Public Relations Officer Borno state police command reads: “Borno state Police command mourns the death of one of its gallant officers, Superintendent of  Police (SP) Pius Sunday , the  Divisional Police Officer (DPO)  Marte Divisional Headquarters, Marte who was killed while responding to a distress call around 2 am in New Marte, leading a  police response team.

“The incident happened on the 20th May, 2024, at about 2309HRS when the DPO, Marte Division, received a complaint from one Adam Abatcha, a Senior Community Health Extension Worker (SCHEW) in charge of Maternal and Child Health Clinic in New Marte that some unknown gunmen numbering about six invaded his house and attempted to abduct him and he struggled and escaped from his abductors and ran to the police station.

“The DPO, SP Sunday mobilised his men to the scene. Sadly, the team was ambushed while in exchange of fire and  the DPO was fatally wounded and couldn’t survive while  one Inspector  Sani Murtala was injured by a bullet on his thigh.

“The injured victim is currently responding to treatment at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) while the corpse of the DPO has been deposited at the UMTH mortuary; discreet investigation is ongoing on the incident.

“On behalf of officers and men of the Borno state Police command, the Commissioner of Police, CP Yusufu Mohammed Lawal hereby expresses heartfelt condolence to the family of the bereaved.”
