Betting: Plateau United goalkeeper incurs NPFL wrath

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has suspended Plateau United goalkeeper Adewale Adeyinka over allegations of insider betting.

In a letter dated August 5, 2025, and signed by NPFL Chief Operating Officer Davidson Owumi, Adeyinka’s registration as a player has been put on immediate hold pending the outcome of an ongoing investigation.

The suspension follows claims made by Plateau United FC that the player refused to sign with a prospective new club after objecting to a contract clause allowing immediate termination if implicated in betting activities.

The NPFL cited Article 15.5, Section B of its Framework and Rules, which prohibits all players from engaging in betting and prescribes penalties under Section C.

“You will be invited to state your defense on these allegations in due course as the investigation proceeds,” the letter read, adding that reinstatement would only be considered if the player is cleared of wrongdoing.

The league warned that any form of betting involvement in matches a player participates in “diminishes the integrity of the league and brings the game into disrepute.”
