Benue: Police commissioner move to strengthen security, clear armed herdsmen from farmlands

The Commissioner of Police for Benue state Command, CP Emenari Ifeanyi, Thursday, has reassured residents of his commitment towards tackling insecurity across communities.

He said since assuming office, he has toured various locations, deploying officers to areas plagued by criminal activities.

The Police Commissioner noted that during his visits, he observed that while farmlands were available, farmers were absent—raising concerns about safety, adding that instead, individuals carrying prohibited arms were spotted, prompting urgent intervention.

Determined to combat banditry, the commissioner pledged swift action to restore peace.

He said the police is collaborating with other security agencies, maintaining that his command has intensified efforts, earning commendations from the state government and Governor.

“Our joint approach has yielded positive results, with improved security allowing farmers to return to their fields.

“Recent operations have led to the arrest of two bandits, including armed herdsmen, with investigations underway to bring them to justice.

“Furthermore, ten armed herdsmen have been remanded in court. Police have also recovered firearms, including two AK-47 rifles and 21 locally made arms.

“As it is now we have the capability to responded swiftly to emergency distress calls, ensuring that urgent cases are tackled within 30 minutes—subject to location.

“In the fight against crime, the police have curbed cult-related attacks in Makurdi, apprehended robbers on the Abuja road, and cleared kidnappers and bandits from Naka road.

“While efforts continue, residents have been assured that major highways are now secure,” he noted.

The CP further noted that the command remains committed to enhancing its security framework through joint patrols, supported by the governor adding that we are urging citizens to report concerns, so that we will act upon credible information.

Meanwhile, the CP noted that investigations are ongoing into the death of a French national, with an autopsy being conducted to determine the cause.

He said, “Benue residents can now be assured of their security and look forward to sustained peace, as the we intensify operations to ensure safety across the state.”
