In a resolute move to combat environmental degradation and promote sustainable ecological practices, Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, Wednesday, flagged off the 2025 annual tree planting campaign in Dass local government area of the state.

The event, held amidst a large turnout of government officials, traditional leaders, party leaders, environmental stakeholders, farmers, and members of the Dass community, marked a significant milestone in the state’s ongoing efforts to tackle desertification, erosion, deforestation, and the adverse effects of climate change.

In his keynote address, Governor Mohammed emphasised the importance of tree planting in building a greener, healthier and more resilient Bauchi state. He noted that the annual campaign is not just a routine ritual but a conscious environmental policy anchored in the state’s Green Bauchi Agenda, aimed at enhancing environmental sustainability and safeguarding the livelihoods of current and future generations.

“Today, as we plant these trees, we are planting hope, resilience, and a sustainable future. The tree planting campaign is a critical pillar in our environmental development strategy. It is our collective duty to protect and preserve our environment against the growing threats of climate change and ecological imbalance,” Bala declared.

Governor Mohammed stressed that the benefits of tree planting are immense and far-reaching. He outlined key areas where the initiative would positively impact communities and the environment. Tree planting helps halt the southward advance of the Sahara Desert and controls gully and surface erosion, especially in areas like Dass with vulnerable topography.

The governor commended the Ministry of Environment and the active involvement of Dass local government council and Dass community, especially women and youth groups.

He called on all local government chairmen across the state to replicate the exercise in their domains and ensure effective monitoring and maintenance of the planted trees.

In his address , the Commissioner Ministry of Housing and Environment, Hon Danlami Ahmed Kawule, said planting of trees enhances the aesthetic appeal of towns and cities as well as providing natural habitats, helping to maintain ecological balance, protect and preserve our environment.

In his welcome address, the chairman of Dass local government, Comrade Mohammed Jibo, applauded Governor Bala Mohammed for his dogged determination in fighting desertification in Bauchi state.

The flag-off ceremony featured the symbolic planting of tree seedlings by the governor, top government officials, and the Emir of Dass.
