The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Yobe State University branch has commenced an indefinite industrial strike over demands for entitlements and autonomy from the state government.

The strike was announced after a closed-door meeting, with the ASUU branch Chairman, Dr. Ahmed Ibrahim Karage, briefing journalists on the decision.

He explained that the demands include the union demand of the implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage and consequential adjustments for all staff, appropriate promotion placement and yearly increment for staff, with payment of arrears and payment of arrears for yearly increments, 2019 minimum wage consequential adjustment, and promotion arrears from 2018 to 2024.

According to him, others are payment of PG facilitation allowances and other statutory entitlements respectively.

The union chairman stated that despite repeated reminders and patient waiting, the government has not responded meaningfully to their demands.

“The situation has led to a loss of morale among academic staff, severely impacting their ability to function effectively.

“The strike may cause disruption to academic activities, and the union regrets the impact on students and their families. However, the union believes that the future of the university depends on a sustainable and fair system that respects the contributions of its staff and honors its obligations,” he said.

The union urged all stakeholders, including parents, students, alumni, the media, and civil society, to join them in appealing for justice, fairness, and responsible governance in the education sector.

The union said the strike will continue until the government fulfills its responsibilities.
