In order to improve the health system in Nigeria, the Association of Nigeria Health Journalist (ANHEJ) has advocated for a unique UHC model that can address the peculiar health needs of the country.

ANHEJ gave the advice in a communiqué issued at the end of the association’s sixth annual conference and signed by its president, Hassan Zaggi and the general secretary, Nike Adebowale.

The conference with the theme; “Universal Health Insurance and National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA): How Can Nigeria Get It Right?” appealed to media entrepreneurs and practitioners to update their equipment and skills in line with current global trends in the information and communication technology (ICT) sector.

It said this would help the sector in playing  its constitutional role of informing the public, holding leadership accountable and setting the agenda for the desired behavioural change, in order to birth a healthy society and improved healthcare system.

ANHEJ pledged to improve its sensitisation and awareness creation on the importance of health insurance so that political leaders, well-to-do individuals, states and local governments could enroll their citizens in health insurance.

The group also promised commitment to monitoring closely the implementation of the various health insurance packages and expose their weaknesses so that the NHIA and other relevant agencies of government could make the needed amendments for the good of all Nigerians.
