Anambra rerun: INEC distributes sensitive materials, police restrict movement

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Friday, commenced distribution of sensitive materials ahead of the rerun election at Nnewi North, Nnewi South & Ekwusigo and Orumba North Orumba South federal constituencies in Anambra state.

The distribution, which kicked off from the Central Bank of Nigeria branch at Awka, was supervised by stakeholders from the two federal constituencies to ensure that eligible voters from the affected 5 polling units of Nnewi in Nnewi North local government area and 16 polling units of Nanka in Orumba North LGA accessed them timely.

The INEC State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Queen Elizabeth Agwu, who addressed newsmen after the exercise, explained that result sheets of all types and ballot papers were received and distributed for onward movement to the two council areas while the BVA’s machine and other items had been handed over to Electoral Officers.

Agwu urged staff of the commission, including the ad-hoc staff to be proactive and ensure that every eligible voter on the queue from 8am to 2pm exercise their franchise, while enjoining politicians to play the game according to the rule or face prosecution in line with the electoral act.

Meanwhile, Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Mr Aderemi Adeoye, urged eligible voters at affected polling units in Anambra state not to panic as the command has deployed personnel to provide adequate security for them throughout the exercise.

Aderemi, in a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Tochukwu Ikenga, ordered restriction of vehicular movement in Nanka, Orumba North LGA and Nnewi in Nnewi North LGA from midnight to 6p.m. on 3rd February, 2024, noting that only those directly involved in the electoral process, and workers on essential services would be allowed free movements.
