Anambra: Police nab 2 over vandalisation of 2nd Niger Bridge

No fewer than two suspect were Monday arrested by the Anambra state Police Command for vandalising the 2nd Niger Bridge and a transformer in Awka South local government area.

A statement by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr

Tochukwu Ikenga said the police command has arrested two persons alleged to have been involved in vandalisation of materials used in the construction of the Second Niger Bridge, Onitsha.

He said, “Men of Anambra state Police Command attached to Harbour Division last week nabbed two robbers dispossessing unsuspecting citizens of their valuables on the Second Niger Bridge.”

Residents of Amawbia town Monday beheld the corpse of a man believed to have been electrocuted.

Sources said the corpse whose identity had not been revealed, was found lying close to a vandalised transformer in front of a hotel.

A resident of Amawbia, Mr Solunna Ekebuike, said, “We found the corpse in the morning. We also discovered that our transformer was vandalised and some of the installation cables were missing. So we are suspecting that he is a member of a gang that capitalised on vandalising transformers.

“May be he was electrocuted in the process and his gang abandoned him and ran away with our cables. I can only remember that Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) restored power in our area around 12am. May be that was when it happened.”

When our correspondent arrived the scene of the incident, he was told that the police had taken away the corpse, but the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Tochukwu Ikenga, was yet to confirm the report as at press time.
