The Speaker Borno State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abdulkarim Lawan and other honourable members, have applauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for given immediate approval for the reconstruction and expansion of the Alau Dam.

The dam which serves as major source of drinking water and for commercial purposes to the people of Maiduguri metropolis, collapsed on 10th September 2024, resulted in massive flood that ravaged many parts of the city with unspecified number of deaths, as critical infrastructures worth billions of naira were submerged.

In a press statement signed by the Speaker on behalf of other state lawmakers in Borno, on Wednesday, Lawan congratulated the government and the people of the state for the intervention by the federal government.

He said, the Tuesday 4th February, 2025 Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu where a total sum of N80billion was approved for reconstruction of the Alau Dam, was a welcome development, considering the socio-economic importance of the project if completed.

“On behalf of my humble self and the entire lawmakers, as well as all staff of Borno State House of Assembly (BOSHA), we really appreciate Mr. President and Commander -in- Chief of the Armed Forces, President Bola Tinubu, for his approval to the tune of N80 billion to reconstruct and expand the Alau Dam.

“We also commend the President and Vice-President, Senator Kashim Shettima, Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno state and all other concerned individuals and corporate organisations for their unwavering support to victims of flood and other disasters.

“At a point, resilient people in the state, especially, those directly or indirectly affected by the flood have began to express worry as the next rainy season approaches, but with this intervention by Mr. President to revive the Dam, it has renewed hope to the hopeless in the society”, the speaker stressed.
