President of the Senate Godswill Akpabio Thursday stated the significance of establishing the University of Applied Science Manchok in Kaura local government area of Kaduna state.
The Senator stated this while declaring open the bill seeking the establishment of the university and other tertiary institutions in the country which was held at the Conference Hall 221, New Senate building, National Assembly Complex, Abuja.
Represented by Senator Gbenga Daniel, the Senate President highlighted the important role of tertiary institutions in Nigeria and assured that the National Assembly is committed to prioritising their establishment.
He also assured that the Senate, through the Committee on Tertiary Education and TETFUND, will carefully consider the memorandum that will form the basis for the passage of the bills.
Earlier, the chairman of the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND, Dandutse Muntari Mohammed, requested all presentations to be sent to the committees and acknowledged that not everyone would be able to speak due to the recent loss of a member of the House of Representatives, Ekene Adams, who represented Chikun/ Kajuru Federal Constituency.
In his remarks during the public hearing, the sponsor of the bill and Senator representing Kaduna South Senatorial District, Sunday Marshall Katung, expressed satisfaction that the proposed university was a historic event in pursuit of knowledge for the people of his zone.
