The Federal Government has appointed Prof. Mathew Adamu as the new acting Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja, recently renamed Yakubu Gowon University.

According to a statement signed by the acting Registrar and Secretary of the Governing Council, Mrs. Roseline Adakayi, Prof. Adamu will serve for a period of three months, effective Monday, August 11, 2025.

He succeeds Prof. Patricia Manko Lar, who assumed the role in February 2025 for a six-month tenure in acting capacity.

“During her stewardship, Prof. Lar provided purposeful leadership, fostered academic and administrative stability, and, in concert with the relevant organs of the University, successfully initiated the selection process for the appointment of a substantive Vice-Chancellor,” the statement read.

Adakayi added that the new acting Vice-Chancellor is expected to work closely with the Governing Council, chaired by Dr. Olanrewaju Tejuoso, to conclude the process of appointing a substantive Vice-Chancellor in accordance with statutory provisions and guidelines.

She expressed the Council’s appreciation to Prof. Lar for her dedicated service, visionary leadership, and commitment to institutional progress, while wishing Prof. Adamu a successful tenure during the transition period.
