Again, Peter Obi defends one-term pledge

The Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has firmly defended his recent pledge to serve only a single four-year term if elected president in 2027, rejecting claims that the promise is unrealistic or a sign of desperation.

Obi’s commitment has stirred mixed reactions, with a factional leader of the Labour Party, Abayomi Arabambi, warning Nigerians not to take the former Anambra State governor seriously. Arabambi dismissed the pledge as a political tactic.

Responding via his X (formerly Twitter) handle on Tuesday, Obi insisted that his one-term vow stems from a genuine desire to rebuild Nigeria, not personal ambition.

“I still find it baffling that my decision to do a term of four years, if given the mandate to rule this country, is generating so much agitation,” Obi said. “By this feeling, we are doubting the fact that a sincere leader can achieve much in 48 months.”

Refuting allegations of desperation, Obi said he has never exhibited behaviours typical of power-hungry politicians. He listed such behaviours as aggressive rhetoric, paranoia, empty promises, personal attacks, and policy flip-flopping—none of which he said reflect his political conduct.

“My political journey has always prioritised principle over power and civility over conflict,” he said, adding that he has never been involved in electoral violence, thuggery, or ballot snatching. “Conduct your investigations. You will find no stains of rigging or violence associated with my name,” he challenged critics.

Obi further argued that significant reforms can be accomplished within four years, including tackling corruption, strengthening rule of law, and ensuring credible elections. He criticised extravagant government spending, suggesting that funds used for luxuries like presidential jets could be redirected to critical sectors such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure.

“Leadership for me is not about entitlement or personal gain. It is about delivering meaningful impact,” he stated.

Obi’s one-term proposal has become a major topic in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections, sparking debate among political observers, critics, and his growing base of supporters.
