Edo guber: Supreme court verdict, reaffirmation of electoral process credibility – INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has lauded  the Supreme court verdict which affirmed the victory of Senator Monday Okpebholo as the winner of the September 21, 2024 Edo State governorship election.

The commission discribed the verdict as a  reaffirmation of the credibility of the nation’s electoral process.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the election, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, had approached the courts to cahllenge the declaration of Okpebholo as winner of the poll.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), of INEC in Edo state, Prof. Anugbum Onuoha, who disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, noted that the supreme court judgement has “restored confidence in our democratic institutions.”

Prof. Anugbum added that the judgement was a triumph for democracy and a vindication of the integrity and professionalism of INEC under his stewardship which conducted the election.

He expressed gratitude to God whom according to him, has once again proven himself faithful and just. 

Continuing, the REC said, “The clarity and depth of the judgment confirm that truth, when pursued with diligence and transparency, will always prevail over propaganda and suspicion.

“I wish to thank the people of Edo State for their peaceful participation in the election and for their patience and belief in the due process of the law. 

“Let this judgment serve as a reminder to us all  that while our democracy may be tested, it remains resilient when founded on truth, fairness, and justice.” 

Prof. Anugbum reaffirmed  his unwavering commitment to uphold the principles of impartiality, diligence, and service to the people.
