Police, Soludo condemn killing of Ebonyi natives in Anambra

At least 13 natives of Ebonyi state residents at Ogboji, Orumba South Local Government Area (LGA), Anambra state were killed by unknown gunmen.

Gunmen had on June 30, 2025, opened fire indiscriminately on a peaceful gathering of the natives, leaving 10 people dead and several others injured.

The Police Commissioner, Anambra state command, Dr Ikioye Orutugu, in a statement by the Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr Tochukwu Ikenga, described the attack as “regrettable and senseless,” noting that they were committed to apprehending the perpetrators and bringing them to justice.

“Preliminary investigations reveal that the armed assailants arrived in two Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) and launched an unprovoked attack on the meeting, firing sporadically at the attendees,” he stated.

According to him, the victims were rushed to the hospital, where ten people were sadly confirmed dead and deposited at the morgue where the injured were currently recuperating in the hospital.

He added that the scene of the incident has been condoned as the command had started working on credible information and intelligence that could lead to identify and arrest those responsible for the heinous act.

Also speaking, the Anambra state governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, through a statement by the Commissioner for Information, Dr Law Mefor, condemned the incident, noting that they would follow it up to a logical conclusion.

“We want to assure the good people of Anambra and beyond that this incident was not targeted at any particular state or ethnic group. Preliminary investigations suggest that the unfortunate incident may have stemmed from an internal squabble.

“The government expects the police command to conduct a thorough investigation, identify the perpetrators of this heinous crime, and bring them to justice. The government assures the people of Ogboji and the entire state that we will do everything humanly possible to ensure justice is served,” he stated.
