The Lagos state government has initiated an in-depth investigation into the tragic death of a 2-year-old pupil, Miss Rapheala Ogbodo, who drowned in a swimming pool at Smiley Kids Montessori, located within Heritage Place Estate, Sangotedo, Lagos.
The unfortunate incident occurred on Friday.
In a statement released weekend by the deputy director of Public Affairs, Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, the government confirmed that the school has been shut down to facilitate a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The ministry expressed deep condolences to the family of the deceased and reassured the public of its commitment to preventing similar tragedies in the future.
“The Lagos state government extends its heartfelt sympathies to the family of the victim. We are committed to ascertaining the root cause of this incident and ensuring appropriate measures are put in place to avert such occurrences,” the statement read.
Preliminary findings reveal that Smiley Kids Montessori, where the tragic event unfolded, was operating without government approval. The school’s proprietor, Mr. Thomas Ayodele, is reportedly under scrutiny as authorities assess potential lapses in safety and regulatory compliance.
This incident has sparked renewed concerns over the safety protocols in schools across the state, particularly those offering extracurricular activities such as swimming.
The Lagos state government reiterated its resolve to enforce stricter monitoring and compliance standards for schools to protect the well-being of pupils.
