Indications have emerged that Nigerian airports operations might be disrupted by aviation workers following the continued deduction of 50 percent from the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of agencies in the aviation industry by the federal government.
The threat for showdown is coming from union workers drawn from the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN), National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE), the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporation, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE) and Association of Nigerian Aviation Professionals (ANAP).
The workers are drawn from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria and (FAAN), Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT), Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB).
The unions directed the workers to withdraw their services on August 21, 2024 to demand the discontinuation of the deduction of the 50 percent.
The letter titled “Save Aviation From Collapse,” dated August 14, 2024, instructed all state councils, women commissions/committees, youth councils and branches of the unions nationwide to fully mobilise for, and ensure full compliance and success of the peaceful protests.”
