4 die in Niger farmers, herders’ clash

Four persons were reportedly killed yesterday in a clash between farmers and herders in Sabon Daga community of Bosso local government area of Niger state.
Blueprint learnt that the clash was triggered by some farmers who attempted to deny herders and their cattle access to farmland.

Witnesses said an argument had resulted between both parties, which later degenerated into bloody clash with casualties on both sides.
It was learnt that Sabon Daga is a Gbagyi community that hosts former Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar’s Maizube Farms.
The clash is coming few days after cattle rustlers attacked Angwa Umadi Village in Shiroro local government area of the state, killing a Senior Secondary School (SSS) 2 student and wounding 15 others.
The senator representing Niger-east Senatorial District, David Umaru, had also recently appealed to the state government to put in place mechanism to halt the incessant bloodletting in the state.

Niger state police command Public Relations Officer, DSP Bala Elkana, confirmed the incident to reporters in Minna.
“Four corpses have been recovered, but security operatives are still combing the bushes around the area because the incident just happened and there could be more casualties.”
He said the situation had been brought under control following a quick intervention by men of the Kpakugu police division with re-inforcement from the command.
He also said Fulani and Gbagyi elders had been mobilised and have called the meeting of their respective people in order to forestall the possibility of a backlash as well as finding a lasting solution such incident in future.
