Burkina Faso has claimed the first gold medal of the ongoing CAA Africa U-18/U-20 Athletics Championships in Abeokuta, making an early impact in the continental competition.
Zango Salisa emerged victorious in the U-18 women’s triple jump event with a leap of 12.79 metres, edging out Morocco’s Masat Kaota, who recorded a distance of 12.39 metres to settle for silver. Tunisia’s Finel Chidi completed the podium with a bronze-winning jump of 12.26 metres.
Later in the day, defending champions South Africa secured their first gold medal through Natro Ler, who won the U-18 high jump event with a clearance of 2.00 metres. Nigeria’s Ikeki Daniel took silver, while his compatriot Oddo Melvin earned the bronze.
The championships continue with more events scheduled over the coming days, as young athletes from across Africa compete for continental glory.
