2023: INEC declares election inconclusive

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Imo state, Monday, declared last Saturday’s Imo East (Owerri Zone) senatorial election inconclusive.

It was gathered that the reason given for declaring it inconclusive was over voting by enthusiastic voters that queued for the election.

The affected areas are Owerri Municipal, Owerri North, Owerri West and Mbaitoli local government areas.

Before now, the major contestants, namely, Uche Onyegucha of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), incumbent Senator Ezenwa Onyewuchi of the Labour Party and Alex Mbata of the All Progressives Congress (APC) had laid claim to victory and  expecting INEC to declare them winner.

Also, Mbaitoli-Ikeduru (Mbaike) Federal Constituency election has been declared inconclusive due to the inability of INEC to conduct election in 19 polling units of Amaike Mbieri Ward and 33 other polling units in 12 wards of the federal constituency.

Blueprint correspondent gathered that INEC took the decision after a petition was written and submitted by the SDP agent, Mr. Benjamin Anochie, and promised that a date would be fixed within 48 hours for elections to be conducted in the affected polling units.

It is worth noting that both Presidential, Senatorial and House of Representatives elections did not hold in these affected areas as INEC noted disappearance of sensitive electoral materials and wrong BVAS password/codes.
