The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun state yesterday said it will select all its candidates for the 2019 general elections by consensus. The party made the announcement just as Governor Ibikunle Amosun announced his desire to run for the senate at the elections. Amosun also said the governorship candidate of the party will be announced on Thursday. The decision to adopt consensus candidates was taken at an extended stakeholders meeting of the party held at Metros Hotels in Abeokuta, the state capital, presided over by the state chairman of the party, Derin Adebiyi. Other leaders of the party at the meeting include Amosun, former deputy governors, current and former national and state lawmakers from the party, state party executives, and local government chairpersons. The meeting agreed, however, that if the consensus approach fails, the party would adopt direct primaries. When the chairman of the party in the state, Adebiyi, at the meeting asked stakeholders to signify their support for the decision byraising up their hands, all of them complied. The party then issued a communiqué which was read by its spokesperson, Wole Elegbede. “The Ogun State APC shall have consensus primary into all elective positions in 2019 general elections,” the communique stated. “That where the consensus fails, a direct primary shall be used to choose candidates for such positions”. In his response, Mr Amosun who disclosed his plan to return to the senate after his governorship term, said the party’s decision was supreme, adding that any contrary action was aimed at dividing the party. He said he would announce the party’s governorship flag-bearer tomorrow.
