Youth Corps members to enjoy NHIS Coverage

Youths Corps members in Nigeria may begin to experience a better quality of life soon, as plans are underway to ensure that members of the National Youth Service Corps receive medical attention with ease, under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
A press release issued by the Head, Media & Public Relation, Ayo Osinlu, quoted the Executive Secretary of the Scheme, Dr. Femi Thomas, as saying the management of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) and leadership of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) were fine tuning strategies that would guarantee corps members effective medical attention over the period of their mandatory one year national service, adding that the coverage of corps members would further raise their productivity level and dedication to the cause of the nation.
Dr. Thomas who made this known recently, during a courtesy call on the Provost of the College of Medicine, University of Lagos (CMUL), Ishaga, Lagos, said that the Scheme was in multilateral engagements with the nation’s Labour organisations to earn their consent for the payment of workers counterpart contributions, stressing that the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) has designed a reward system of extending cover for all public officers under the Scheme to cover the post-retirement season of their lives.
In her remark, the Provost of the College, Dr. Folasade Ogunsola gave the assurance that staff and students of the institution would be sensitized to join the Scheme, emphasising that the ideals of health insurance merited all forms of support.
Furthermore, she noted that the Executive Secretary who, until his appointment was a lecturer in the College with an enviable record, deserved necessary backing, expressing the College’s readiness to offer any required assistance in pursuit of the Scheme’s mandate.
She assured that a committee of the College would be set up to liaise with the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), to explore possible areas of collaboration between the two institutions.
