Yoruba broadcasters inaugurate FCT chapter, harp on professionalism

The Yoruba Broadcasters Association (YBA) FCT chapter has officially inaugurated its Abuja chapter with a call for issue-based reporting in order to enhance security and economic growth of the nation.

General Manager of NTA Ado – Ekiti, Mr. Segun Ojelade who made the call at the event Thursday said a society where the people don’t have the opportunity to air their views is dead, but that freedom of speech as an essential ingredient of democracy must not be abused.

He charged the media to ensure that it gives voice not only to the highly placed individuals but the vulnerable to achieve peace, unity and development of the society.

The GM noted that the Nigerian constitution guarantees freedom of speech and access to journalists to pursue their profession anywhere in the country.

“In doing so, you must try to as much as possible maintain the integrity of the profession by giving fair hearing and opportunity to all irrespective of religion, age and section,” he said.

The general manager who was the guest speaker at the occasion stated that, “our country is in a terrible situation and the media needs to stand to be counted to restore normalcy and ensure the path of progress.

“We have had challenges in the country and journalists have come to help during the struggle for independence. It was the media that came to the rescue. During the struggle for democracy, the media played vital role. So in this trying period, Nigeria needs you to be active and to do your job constructively without fear or favour.”

On his part, the National President of YBA, Aare Ajiyinrere Bakare Olusayo Micheal, observed that a solid ethics code characterises a good journalist’s fairness, objectivity when reporting everything from local referendums, pointing out that professional journalists abhor fake news based on rumor, innuendo and unverifiable tips.

Also speaking, Oba (Dr.) Olusegun Salawu, the Oba Yoruba FCT-Abuja, called on Nigerians to continue to pray for the country’s leadership and to cohabit peacefully for national development.
