Yobe: NSCDC to deploy Agro Rangers unit to curb herders, farmers’ clash

Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, (NSCDC) Yobe state Command, said it would deploy Agro Rangers special squad to curb herders and farmers clash in some prone local government councils of Yobe state.

The State Commandant, Ayinla Olowo disclosed Tuesday after a meeting between Yobe state government, the NSCDC, Shulabawa cattle rearers and
farmers in Tarmuwa local government council at Government House, Damaturu.

According Olowo, the meeting was convened as result of excesses of the Shulabawa herders who always bring their cattle to the local government council yearly for grazing and consequently causes conflicts between them and the farmers.

The meeting which was chaired by the Yobe state Deputy Governor, Idi Barde Gubana, was aimed at discussing complains by the farmers on destructive activities of the rearers on their farm produce.

Olowo further, said the Agro Rangers special squad that would be deployed to Tarmuwa and Fune local government councils will mediate on any issue of conflict between the farmers and herders.

“This unit is a special squad that will mediate between the two parties, maintain and sustain government recognized grazing routes and also to maintain security on RUGA settlements whenever they are established,” he said.

According to the Commandant, the unit will also gather intelligence information in respect of herders/farmers and periodically patrol farm settlements across the state.
