The Yobe State Hisbah Commission on Friday organised an interfaith dialogue aimed at fostering peaceful coexistence between Muslims and Christians in the Potiskum and Nangere local government areas.
The one-day event, executed in collaboration with the Multi-Sectoral Crisis Recovery Project (MCRP), underscores the commission’s commitment to maintaining harmony among religious communities. It serves as a proactive measure to reinforce resilience and promote mutual understanding.
The State Chairman of the Hisbah Commission, Dr. Yahuza Hamza Abubakar, represented by Malam Muhammad Bashir Kukuri, highlighted the dialogue’s role as a platform for peace building, urging participants to engage constructively rather than confrontationally.
In his remarks, the State Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Bishop Yohanna A. Audu, echoed the same sentiment, emphasising the need to resist the politicisation of religion.
The emirs of Fika, Potiskum, and Tikau through their representatives encouraged community members to embrace lawfulness and unity beyond ethnic and religious divides.
Topics discussed included: Shared teachings and values that enhance inter-communal relations; the harmful effects of misinformation and hate speech in fuelling divisions, and the importance of interfaith engagement and cooperation, rooted in Islamic and Christian teachings, respectively.
