Yobe govt launches free meals distribution for Ramadan Iftar to Tsangaya schools

The Yobe state government, through the Arabic and Islamic Education Board, on Friday launched the distribution of free Ramadan Iftar meals to Tsangaya schools across Damaturu, the state capital.

While briefing journalists in his office in Damaturu, the Executive Secretary of the Arabic and Islamic Education Board, Umar Abubakar, said three Tsangaya schools were being targeted daily, with each school accommodating between 150 and 300 Almajiri students.

He said the initiative aimed to alleviate the hardships faced by Almajiri students during the holy month of Ramadan, particularly amid the economic challenges in the country.

Abubakar revealed that the free Ramadan meals included jollof rice with beef, watermelon, and porridge, which are individually packaged for each student.

In addition, the executive secretary noted that the board had purchased clothes, shoes, and other Sallah materials for over 800 Almajiri students and vulnerable families across the state’s 17 local government areas.

“This initiative is designed to ensure that the Almajiri and vulnerable individuals have food for breaking their fast and new clothes to wear during the Sallah festivities.

“It reflects our commitment to supporting the educational and welfare needs of our Almajiri children. To our dear Almajiri brothers, we hope this Iftar feeding programme brings joy and comfort to your hearts,” he said.

He also commended Yobe state Governor Mai Mala Buni for his continued support and assistance to the Arabic and Islamic Education Board, “which has enabled the board to effectively serve the people.”
