Yero pledges to stop cattle rustlers

Kaduna state Governor, Dr Mukhtar Ramalan Yero, yesterday promised to check the menace of cattle rustlers raiding settlements of Fulani herdsmen in parts of the state and put a stop to the problem that had caused untold hardship to cattle rearers.

Speaking when he received the Chairman and members of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, who paid him a courtesy visit, Yero said the perpetrators were not resident in Kaduna state, but were attacking Fulani herds in boundary communities from neighbouring states.

Yero said he would leave no stone unturned to put an end to the nefarious acts.
He said: “The issue of cattle rustlers is very serious issue because both Fulani and non-Fulani are accusing one another of perpetrating it. We have to do something about it and it is not just Kaduna state, we have to involve other neighbouring states and we have been discussing on ways to check the issue.”

According to him, there is an international dimension to the cattle rustling crime “because the road they follow is an international route and sometime they move into neighbouring countries after committing crime.”

Governor Yero said the Federal Government would be invited to support affected states in checking the menace of cattle rustlers as it affects not only Kaduna but also Zamfara, Katsina, Kebbi, Niger and other neighbouring states.

Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, Malam Ardo Ahmadu Suleiman, had earlier told Yero that cattle rustlers posed threat to the Fulani communities and called on the state government to take measures in curtailing the menace.
