The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has congratulated Nigeria’s Super Falcons for their outstanding performance so far in the ongoing 2023 FIFA World Cup.
SWAN ‘s congratulation message to the country’s Senior Women National Team is coming after they demonstrated resilience to beat the tournament’s co-host Australia 3-2 in group D second match on Thursday.
SWAN President, Mr. Isaiah Benjamin, who took time out to watch the Randy Waldrum-led team against Australia in a statement on Friday in Abuja, expressed optimism that with focus, Super Falcons will perform better and surpass expectations at the mundial.
“On behalf of the National Executive Committee of SWAN, I congratulate our Super Falcons technical crew and players for making Nigeria proud in far away in Australia.
“Their performance so far in the competition has shown their determination to do well. Beating the co-host Australia in front of their many fans, after holding one of the tournament favourites Canada to a draw in the first game, is no mean feat.
“What is needed now is for the team to remain disciplined and focused in prosecuting their remaining group match against Ireland and possibly proceed to the Round of 16 with more vigour, devoid of distractions.
“For us as Sports Journalists, we will continue to do well to support the team with well-articulated contents as we anticipate your podium finish.
“We equally believe that both the Federal Government and Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) are working steadily to put smiles on your faces as you further raise Nigeria’s banner higher among the county of Nations,” the President said via a statement issued by SWAN Secretary-General Amb. Ikenna Okonkwo.
On Friday, South Africa squandered 2-0 lead to later settle for a 2-2 draw against Argentina in their second group match.
