Women liberation my objective – Sanusi

By Bashir Mohammed Kano

Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, has said that nothing can stop the Kano Emirate Council from supporting the quest for women liberation and inclusion in politics and governance, adding that for what they stand to achieve, women were indispensable pillars of progress. Speaking yesterday at the annual Women Summit organised by Disputes Resolution and Development Initiatives (DAG), Sanusi said his stance on women was explicit, adding that his support to the cause would never be shaken by any means. According to him, “no society can ever develop, with the women folk pushed to the lower rung of the ladder in all spheres of human endeavour” pointing out that their numerical strength was enough to determine the need for them to be carried along in the scheme of things.

Sanusi, who was represented by the Danmajen Kano and District Head of Gwale, Alhaji Yahaya Inuwa Abbas, however stated that the history of women struggle and relevance in Nigeria had started during Usman Danfodio’s dynasty, which gave birth to the meteoric rise of Islam, stressing that the laudable contributions they rendered left much to be desired. In her remarks, wife of the Kano state governor, Hajiya Hafsat Abdullahi Umar Ganduje said the present administration had made considerable inroad in supporting hundreds of women in the state to acquire vocational skills and that millions of naira had also been spent on empowerment programmes.

The state governor was represented by the State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Hauwa Yardada Bichi, who stated that women in the state had been incorporated into politics and governance since the advent of the present administration Speaking earlier, the Executive Director Disputes Resolution and Development Initiatives, Dr. Mustapha Muhammad, had called on the state governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, to appoint women as vice chairpersons of all the 44 Interim Management Officers.
