Woman, 40, docked over N400,000 credit fraud

A 40-year-old woman, Sekinatu Taiwo, was Tuesday brought before a Surulere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly obtaining N400,000, under the pretext of paying it back.

The defendant is being tried on a two-count charge of obtaining money by false pretences.

Taiwo pleaded innocence of the charges.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Anthonia Osayande, told the court that the defendant committed the offences in June 2018 at No. 6, Western Avenue, Ojuelegba, Surulere, Lagos.

“The defendant fraudulently obtained the sum of N400,000 from two complainants, Mrs Adebimpe Adeyiga and one Mrs Alison Olufemi,” Osayande said.

She said the defendant remained elusive after the time she was given to repay the money had elapsed.

The prosecutor said the offences contravened Sections 287 and 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Bola Folarin-Williams, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum.

She said  the sureties must be gainfully employed and show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos state government.

The case was adjourned until March 19 for substantive trial. (NAN)
