Why CNG buses donated by FG are still parked in our premises – RTEAN

On November 28, 2025, the federal government launched CNG-powered buses as part of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Renewed Hope Clean Energy Transport Scheme.

In a move seen as a strategic initiative designed to ease the burden of fuel subsidy removal on Nigerians, the buses were, thereafter, handed over to the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) and National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO).

Speaking during the launch of the locally made P-CNG buses in Abuja, the Minister of Transportation, Said Ahmed Alkali, said the buses symbolise the government’s commitment to empowering citizens while transitioning to a cleaner energy economy.

The minister assured that the ministry will ensure effective sensitisation of the transport owners, operators, passengers and the general public to make the Initiative accessible to Nigerians.

“The union operators would ensure the effective use and proper maintenance of these buses. This is not just about today, but about creating a transportation system that will serve generations to come,” he stated.

However, four months after the buses were handed over to RTEAN, NURTW and NARTO, the buses have not been deployed on Nigerian roads to serve the purpose of their donations.

Investigation by Blueprint revealed that some of the Presidential Initiative CNG buses donated to RTEAN are presently parked within its headquarters, located at 48 Khartoum Street, Wuse 5, Abuja.

Many of the hybrid powered CNG buses are also parked opposite Grullzhut Garden (Old Unique Garden), Senanga Street, Zone 5, Wuse, Abuja, also branching off to 48 Khartoum Street, Wuse 5, which houses RTEAN offices.

When Blueprint reporter visited the RTEAN headquarters Tuesday, the Secretary General, Comrade Yusuf Ibrahim Adeniyi, said the association detected faults in the CNG buses and had to suspend their usage in order not to put the lives of Nigerians at risk.
