We’re focused on increasing local content use – Transcorp Hotel MD

The Managing Director/CEO of Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Dupe Olusola says the company is very focused on increasing local content drive as it seeks to cut down on costs of doing business.

The Transcorp MD, who said this while fielding questions from journalists after the tree lighting event at the hotel also said it is part of a broader plan to cut down on imports.

The hotel kicked off the 2024 Christmas season with a tree lighting event. The event had in attendance Chairman Heirs Holding Group, Mr. Tony Elumelu and Dr. Owen Omogiafo, Group CEO of Transcorp Group, among several other dignitaries.

Olusola noted that with income reducing in Nigeria, it was important that the company adopt cost saving strategies that would help it retain its loyal customers while rendering quality service.

She said, “Any business that tries to run now by importing can never survive, because, as we know, even disposable income amongst our people is not really there as everybody’s income has actually reduced, whether we like it or not. So, we’re very, very focused on local content. You know, our foods are grown as much as possible around our environment, and what is not grown around our environments, we’re bringing from northern areas and other areas. So, we’re very, very focused on local content, you know, in terms of food, in terms of even amenities, we’re constantly looking at how we can localize. This is a very strong drive for us, and it’s important.

Reflecting on 2024, the Managing Director noted that despite the difficult business terrain, the company would finish the year in a good position.

“We’re going to finish very, very strong. We’re so happy about the numbers that we’ve achieved so far. Our occupancy, we have at over 83% you know, for a 677-room hotel, that is exceptionally good. It means that almost every day of the week we are busy. In terms of our profitability as well, very, very strong numbers. Our revenue was surpassing all the numbers from previous year. So, we’re in a good place, and we know that we’re positive and optimistic that next year will be better. There are things obviously that we’re constantly challenged with, which is the increasing cost of running a business. You know, we all live in Nigeria. We know the Band A costs that have been given to us. We also know the cost of diesel and all of these things of running a business. But every year, you know, we strategize and say, how can we do things differently to make sure that we’re running efficiently as a business, we’re keeping an eye on our cost and we’re being very innovative and ensuring that we bring in new strategies,” she said.

She said that the tree lighting event is a way of appreciating the collective achievement of every one in the company and also to officially launch Christmas in the Federal Capital Territory.

“And I think the first thing is that we’re so grateful for everything that we have achieved this year. We work together collectively as a team, and we’re a team that believes very strongly in excellence. We believe very strongly in giving our guests the best service throughout and so Christmas for us is a season to show appreciation to all of our guests. So, we always start in the first week, or in fact, first three days of the Christmas to kind of like we officially launch Christmas in the town of Abuja, and in Nigeria, actually, to be honest, we have children around coming to listen and enjoy the, you know, the Christmas festivities we feed people. And, you know, we’re just grateful for such a great year. And we’re also very hopeful that we’re going to go into an amazing 2025,” she added.

Welcoming guests earlier, General Manager, Transcorp Hilton Abuja Joerg Potreck, said the Christmas tree lighting represents more than just the festive season as it reminds every one of the warmth of home, the joy of family and friends, and the kindness that fills the air during these special weeks.

“It is truly wonderful to see so many of you gathered here tonight as we come together to celebrate one of the most magical times of the year – the Christmas season. Tonight, we have the honor of lighting our beautiful Christmas tree, a symbol of hope, unity, and joy for our community.

“As we stand here, let us take a moment to appreciate the true spirit of Christmas – the spirit of giving, of caring for one another, and of spreading love. Whether you have been busy preparing for the Year end business, the festive season or just simply enjoying the sights and sounds of the season, let’s remember that the heart of Christmas is found in the connections we share and the kindness we offer.

“I want to take a moment to thank everyone who helped make tonight possible – our team members and all those behind the scenes who worked tirelessly to bring this event to life. Your dedication to our renowned service is what makes evenings like this so special,” the GM said.

Invited guests were treated to Christmas Carols by the Abuja Metropolitan Music Society.
