We’ll partner security agencies to fish out Shiites, Abuja natives vow

Natives of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have expressed readiness to partner security agencies in tackling security challenges in the territory especially activities of members of the proscribed El-Zakzaky-led Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), otherwise known as Shiites, in local communities.

The natives also stated that they were ready to volunteer any useful information that could lead to arrest and prosecution of Shiites involved in criminal activities.

Addressing a press conference, Sunday in Abuja, spokesman of the group, Comrade Yusuf Yunusa, who disclosed that the natives arrived at this position after due consultations with community and political leaders, stressed that they were worried about the high level of insecurity posed by the presence of members of the proscribed Islamic group.

“These people came to Abuja in large number to either forcefully or legally secure the release of their leader Sheik Ibrahim El-Zakzaky from detention without provisions being made for their means of livelihood during the period of their stay in Abuja.

“Now that the situation has turned against them, they find it difficult to go back to their original states of resident, thereby, compounding the existing security challenges in the city.

“Our local communities are no longer safe as reported cases of rape and assault on our people by suspected members of the sect. Before now, we had given government a 48-hour ultimatum to evacuate Shiites from the territory, but after due consultations with our community and political leaders, we are ready to partner with security agencies to fish out these undesirable elements from our communities.

“We are concerned because we know the repercussion of their presence in our communities. If not properly tackled, there might be bloodbath and most residents will have to relocate. However, we don’t have any place to call our own except this city. Therefore, we have to guard it jealously,” he stated.
