VON, NITDA partner on digital literacy, fight against fake news

The Voice of Nigeria (VON) and National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) are set to deepen already existing relationship between the two agencies to partner on digital literacy and fight against fake news.
To this, the two agencies have agreed to set machinery in motion for the production of programmes that would educate Nigerians on digital literacy in local languages.
These decisions were reached when Director General of VON Mallam Jibrin Baba Ndace led his management staff on a courtesy call on the DG of NITDA Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi at the agency’s corporate headquarters in Abuja.
In his remarks, DG VON
According to him, “I am here as a partner and I am interested in deepening the partnership I inherited as Director General. If you are appointed you take both liabilities and assets. But I am here to talk about the assets in terms of leveraging on relationship.
“One of the challenges that we face as a nation is the issue of fake news, misinformation and disinformation. We want to partner with you so that we would be able to consistently tell not only the Nigerian story but African story “
He said VON would continue to use its platforms to shape Nigerian narrative and spotlight Nigerians who are making the nation proud.
“Our job at VON is to consistently tell the Nigerian story, what you do here we will let Nigerians and the world know. One of the things that you do is the opportunities you give to younger Nigerians. These stories need to be told and I am happy you are already doing that.
” The negative narrative about Nigeria and Africa that you hear are not true or over exaggerated. What you hear and how you are treated because you a Nigerian is because of misbehaviour maybe of one Nigerian but they are not telling us about millions of Nigerians in the United states, United Kingdom and other parts of the world who are doing great things. Many developed countries cannot survive without Nigerians, especially in IT, medicine and other critical areas.
“So we willing to fish out Nigerians that are making the country proud wherever they are and tell their stories,” he said.
Ndace lauded NITDA DG for creating opportunities for young Nigerians to excel in IT

“You are creating opportunities for younger people to live their dreams by embracing technology for public good not for the destruction of our country.
“The people you are empowering will remember you for the opportunity you gave to them,” he said.
