The Imo state Governor, Hope Uzodimma, has congratulated the President, Nigeria Guild of Editors(NGE), Mustapha Isa, for a successful term in office.
This was contained in his welcome address at the 2023 National Biennial Convention of the NGE in Owerri, Imo state, Friday, with the theme: Post 2023 Election: Promoting Professionalism for Enhancement of Democracy and Good Governance.
The governor commended him for serving only one term even though the Constitution of the Guild allowed him another term, adding that he acted nobly like the late Nelson Mandela of South Africa who served only one term as president of South Africa.
Commenting on Nigeria’s democracy, Uzodimma said it was work in progress even though the country had performed creditably for 24 years, surpassed its expectations, and had a few days ago, successfully transferred power at the centre.
He added that perfect elections were not a realistic enterprise anywhere in the world as there would always be some teething problems.
The governor, who is also the Chairman, Progressive Goveenors Forum, said he expected journalists to educate the people on that, lamenting that “when media practitioners wittingly or unwittingly discredit the electoral process they ridicule the institutions created by law.”
