US treats 581 thousand Nigerians with tuberculosis in five years

The government of the United States of America (USA) has disclosed that it has saved the lives of more than 581 thousand Nigerians with tuberculosis in the last five years.

A statement by the US embassy in Abuja said the disclosure was made by the country’s Agency for International Development (USAID) Mission Director, Stephen M. Haykin, during a stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja on Wednesday.

Haykin said  the treatments were carried out by USAID in collaboration with Nigerian health officials through a programme known as ” Challenge TB”on which $40 million had been spent since 2014.

According to him, the amount was expended in 14 states on raising awareness, prevention, diagnosis, reducing stigma and building and strengthening of  facilities to cater for those suffering from the disease.

The 14 states are Akwa Ibom, Bauchi, Benue, Cross Rivers, Enugu and Kano, Katsina, Lagos, Nasarawa, Niger, Ondo, Ogun, Osun and Rivers.

“In collaboration with the government of Nigeria and other TB partners, TB Challenge worked to raise awareness, reduce stigma and improve health seeking behaviors among vulnerable Nigerians,” he said.
