Updated: SON workers stage protest over poor welfare

Workers of the Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) on Tuesday staged a protest at it head office in Abuja demanding the immediate approval and implementation of better conditions of service at the agency.

Blueprint observed that the protest started at about 7.00 a.m as workers were seen with placards and they also barricaded the entrance of the agency.

The workers under the umbrella body of the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees alleged that the Director-General of SON, Osita Aboloma had refused to obey the directive of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment on voluntarism.

The Chairman Federal Capital Territory, AUPCTRE, Aliyu Maradun said the management of SON should stop all acts of intimidation and victimisation of members of staff.

According to him, the workers are  calling for a reversal of all punitive transfers effected since “management’s onslaught on the union after the headquarters branch election.”

The Spokesman of SON, Mr Dipo Fashina when contacted said that the issues being raised by the workers were being addressed by the management.

Fashina said that budgetary allocation had been made adding that the amount provided had already been approved in the 2019 budget by the National Assembly.
