Unizik alumni set to inaugurate branches overseas

As parts of efforts to uplift the citadel of learning, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Alumni Association (NAUAA), said it was set to kick-start yearly execution of at least a project in the alma mater under its one-year-one project programme.
Disclosing this in an interview at the end official inauguration of Unizik Alumni Association Onitsha branch and award presentation ceremony held at Onitsha, the Secretary-General of NAUAA, Mr Ejiofo Umegbogu, said the national leadership had succeeded in inaugurating branches all over the country and was about extending same to countries in Europe, Asia and America.

“This branch of Alumni was established last year November 25. It is one year now. Our vision is to mobilize and reunite graduates of the university resident in Onitsha, just as we are doing in other parts of the world. We have branches springing up in Canada and United Kingdom. The aim is to  moblise both human and material resources for development of our alma mater,” he stated.
This he said was necessary as funding of tertiary education could not be left to government alone, as such “We are building a multipurpose Alumni Resource Centre. The project which will be undertaken in conjunction with the University management, is set to commence soon. The Alumni Resource Centre will have features like big auditorium, event centre and halls, lodges for visiting members, offices for the National Secretariat of the Association, and others.”

Earlier, while proclaiming the inauguration of the new branch as well as the swearing-in of the branch executive officers, the  President of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Alumni Association, who is also the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Imo State, Prof. Emeka Ezeonu, said the Alumni Association provides them a ‘home base’ to stay connected to the university and its people.
“The mission and commitment of our Alumni Association remains the same, to keep our Alumni connected to our school and each other, and to mentor and support the students who would later graduate to become ambassadors of the institution and alumna,” he noted.

The University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Okechukwu Esimone, represented by the Alumni Liaison Officer of the University, Dr Nwachukwu Obiakor, in a remark thanked the alumni members for their sacrifices to make the university better and urged wealthy members of the society to make donations and endowments in order to improve academic research and scholarship in the university.
