UNICEF vaccinates 1,000 children, women in remote Taraba community

A total of 1, 000 children and women were weekend vaccinated of child killer and other related diseases in Jegam Yappai remote community of Lau local government area of Taraba state.

A resident of the community, Mama Sanva Bonzewe, while speaking during the vaccination stated that their community over decades has had no single medical facility.

She added that most of their children have not been vaccinated due to the difficult nature of their community.

“Because of the way our community is, it has been difficult for us to access antenatal when we are pregnant,” she said.

Sanva hailed the United Nations Children’s Education Fund UNICEF (UNICEF) for assisting health experts with motorcycles that aided health care workers to access their community for Routine Immunisation and other free medical services and lamented that the government has over the years abandoned the community.

She added that since the intervention of UNICEF, there has been a drastic drop of illness in the community.

UNICEF last year donated 100 motorcycles to Taraba government to improve service delivery to wards with underserved population and zero-dose children.
